For target, a heavy barrel would be best. Barrel length and twist rates are above my expertise. I bought the Savage model 11 .308 with the intent to target shoot. It will be accurate enough for the first few shots, but from what I hear it won't hold accuracy after heating up. If I had it to do again, I'd get the heavier barrel.

The heaviest spitzer bullet that a .244 with a 1 in 12 inch twist barrel could stabilize was 90 grains. .243 Winchester barrels, on the other hand, were rifled 1:10" to stabilize bullets as heavy as 105 grains.

I've had similar experiences with a Model 11, but in .308 with 2 different factory barrels. Looking at the bore with a bore scope showed large gouges in the rifling about 4 inches from the muzzle on one, and chatter marks the length of the bore on the second. Broke down and bought a Criterion varmint barrel and installed it this evening.
